Library Catalog Lesson

Students learned how to navigate the online library catalog. This lesson was created to teach students how to perform a title search, author search, series search, keyword search, and subject search via the online library catalog. Students also were taught how to place a hold on a book, recommend a book to a friend, sibling or teacher, and leave a book review. Students will identify if a book is available and locate the book's call number. The librarian will model and demonstrate how to do all of the above tasks. Afterwards students will complete an activity where they find a book via the online catalog and fill out the exit ticket where they must write the book's title, call number, and if it's available.

MODIFICATIONS BASES ON GRADE

2nd Grade: Students will learn what a book call number is. Every book has an address just liked a house. A book's address is comprised of the title of the book and the call number or the spine label. Students will use the visual catalog to search for books and see if the book they want is available

3rd grade: Students will review books address (Title & Call number). Students will then be introduced to the non-visual online catalog. The librarian will model and provide a demonstration of a title search, author search, and a series search. Followed by a demonstration of how to see if a book is available, place a hold, and recommend a book.

4th grade: Students will review the basic online library catalog. The librarian will do a review demonstration of title search, author search, and series search. The students will then be introduced to keyword search and subject search via a demonstration. The librarian will then review placing holds and recommending books.

5th grade: Students will review the basic online library catalog. The librarian will do a review demonstration of title search, author search, series search, keyword search, and subject search. To review keyword vs subject searching the students will participate in a super fun kahoot. Then the librarian will review placing holds and recommending books. Afterwords students will be shown how to locate book reviews. The students will then be tasked with writing their own book review and submitting it for the catalog.
